Frequently Asked Questions About Coaching

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW?

How Can Coaching Help Me?
Coaching can help when you are experiencing change in your life, when you want to identify and set goals or look at options you have in your personal and/or professional life.  Change is unsettling and usually stressful.  As you go through any transition, you can develop more confidence and make greater progress when you have structure, focus and feedback from an experienced coach.  My coaching gives you these resources in a comfortable format custom designed to meet your specific needs.  You will learn the necessary skills to make the changes you desire because you will have the help of a skilled professional who is alongside you during the entire process.

One of my favorite quotes is the following by Patrick Overton: "When you come to the edge of all that you know and take the first steps into the darkness of the unknown, you have to believe that one of two things will happen--you will find something solid to stand on or you will be taught to fly."  I give  my clients both something solid to stand on and the wings to fly.

What Does A Coach Do?
A coach offers you encouragement and support. A coach is better than a best friend because she's objective, offers challenges and asks you to be responsible for your own progress--all in a way that a best friend (or family member) cannot.  A coach spends time with you teaching to you identify, honor and protect your priorities.  A coach puts you in the driver's seat.  You decide on your direction, set your own goals, and pace yourself according to your identified priorities.  A coach will offer you new ways of thinking.  The process is positive, grounded in the present, and asks you to look forward, not back.

My approach incorporates all of the above and incorporates three principles: respect for yourself, respect for others and responsibility for everything that you do.

How Does Coaching Work?
It all starts with a telephone call or email to me (see contact information below).    I'll ask you some general  information and then we'll set up a time for a telephone or face-to-face appointment, depending on your geographical location.

During the first session, I'll  listen to you to learn about you and also ask you some questions.  You'll have the opportunity to decide on a direction and set goals. In future sessions, I'll give you  feedback, guidance, and tools for helping you reach the goals you have set.

I may suggest that you take the Myers Briggs Type Indicator® The SkillScan® or other assessments to assist you in your goal setting.  If you have already taken an assessment, I will help you integrate your results into your planning.

What Is The Difference Between Coaching and Therapy?
Therapy focuses on a person's past--why events happened and the influence of those events on a person's life.  Coaching starts with the present and focuses on the future--where a client is right now and where he/she wants to go in either their personal life, professional life--or both.   Coaching then helps a client  fill in that gap.  The primary questions in coaching are where a client wants to go and what he/she wants to do with their life.

How Long Does Coaching Last?
Coaching can last 6-8 sessions, or it can last longer. It's up to each client to decide. Some clients like to have the benefit of ongoing support and encouragement during times of change. Others hire a coach to focus on a specific area and leave when the goal is accomplished.  In addition, some goals are easy to measure than others.   It's not a straight line process.

What If I Just Want to Make My Good Life Great?
Coaching is appropriate at all times in your life. Often the best time to get help is before you need it. Stability provides a wonderful opportunity to develop long-term plans for personal and career enrichment. I take pleasure in supporting my clients through all of life's ages and stages. I offer a variety of services for people at all levels of professional development.
